Welcome and thanks for checking out Ivey League Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or "BJJ" as it is often called, comes from the legendary Gracie Family of Brazil. BJJ was made famous by its use in the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) back in the early '90s by Gracie Family member Royce Gracie. BJJ uses chokes and joint locks to subdue an attacker rather than punching and kicking them. At Ivey League, located in beautiful Severna Park, Maryland, we are known for having the highest level BJJ program in the area. We are linked with world renowned Team Lloyd Irvin, which has been and still is one of the most dominating teams in both Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

At Ivey League, we will take you through the steps of learning the amazing art of BJJ. We specialize in training complete beginners, so no experience is necessary! You can be in your 60s, you can be overweight or out of shape, it doesn't matter. We will walk you through everything in baby steps.

Please check what some of our students have to say about the training we offer...

About Our Instructor

Ivey League was founded by Danny Ives, who is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Lloyd Irvin. Danny opened his Academy in the Annapolis area back in March of 2008. Since then, he has trained hundreds of men, women, and kids. He has helped them to achieve their goals, no matter if those goals were fun and fitness, self defense, competition or a little of it all.

Danny has been a big part of the growth of modern BJJ in America. He has been training in BJJ since 1994, and has trained with and been coached by members of the Gracie family including Royce, Renzo, Ryan, Relson and Carlos Gracie. Danny has also taught BJJ all over the United States and in Mexico. He is always in high demand for seminars because of his "straight shooter" style of teaching and always showing good techniques.

Danny takes great pride in working with everyday people and helping them learn. Danny has been regarded as one of the most technical instructors in the world and he has a big following because of his passion for teaching.

As a competitor, Danny is one of the best that America has ever produced. Having won just about anything and everything there is to win, he teaches from experience. From weight classes as low as 139.9 pounds to open weight divisions were he faced opponents that weighed as much as 300 pounds, there is no challenge he has not already faced! You can find a list of Danny's competitive credentials on the instructor's link.

What Makes Training at Ivey League Different?

The difference at Ivey League is more than just one thing. For starters, the environment is one that is family like, inspiring and fun. We believe that a good training environment is what will help the students to learn and stay motivated. Rather than screaming and yelling drills, we challenge our students to push themselves with their body and mind. You will see right away that we know everyone at the Academy by name and treat everyone like family. We go out of our way to make sure that your training sessions with us are a very enjoyable experience.

You might ask "what else makes you guys different?" Quite simply, the training we offer is the best. We say that not to boost our own ego but so you know what to expect when you walk in our doors. Our BJJ programs have been proven time and time again, and we follow the Lloyd Irvin game plan to a "T". We don't think of what we will teach in class while we're driving to the academy that same day. We have curriculums in place, training programs and instructors that know what they're doing, and we run a highly structured program. It shows in our students abilities. Once again, when you come to Ivey League you're not a number, and the instructors bend over backwards to make sure you learn the skills in BJJ or any other martial art we offer.

Another thing to think about is our schedule; we are open 7 days a week and have classes in the morning, afternoon and at night! This is important if you have a crazy schedule like so many of us do. Or if you just can't get enough and you want to train every day!

We truly look out for the best welfare of our students. You won't be thrown in there to fight for your life like at some other programs in the area. A lot of BJJ programs will bring you in for your first class, teach you a move or two, then put you straight into live sparring and hope that you can make it through without getting beat up. Here at Ivey League, we will not do that to you. We make sure you know the basics and we are sure to take you step by step, at your own pace. Any class that is listed as "basic" is just that, basic and for a beginner.

Grappling is Too Hard

I've heard people say that they think grappling is WAY TO HARD and are hesitant to give it a try. This is the furthest thing from the truth. Actually it's a pretty funny misconception. I guess some people think that if they come to learn that someone is going to throw them into the Ultimate Fighting Championships. WRONG!

Grappling is FUN first and foremost. It doesn't require any previous experience. Anyone can do it, big people, small people, young people, older people, flexible people, non flexible people, experienced people, non experienced people, ANYONE.

If you have ever thought that martial arts training may be for you I would urge you to come in and see our program for yourself. I guarantee that you'll absolutely love it; we can help meet any of your needs.

"I've lost 40 pounds!"

I would hate for you to miss out on the many benefits that our students are experiencing RIGHT NOW just because you are a little hesitant to give it a try. If that's the case you don't have to come in to try it, just come in to watch. Isn't that fair? But if you want to try it you should take advantage of my generous 30 Day offer TODAY.

I don't know what else I can do to get you to come to our school and see for yourself. If there is something that I'm missing that will get you to come in please call me on my cell phone to let me know what it is, here's my cell phone number 443-517-8958. Trust me I'll do all most anything to prove to you that our program is right for you and that we can help you reach your goals.

Is our Program Right for You?

YES. No matter what your specific goals are, we have programs that will completely fit your needs. Do you just want to get in shape? Do you want to compete? Do you want to become a Champion in the martial arts? Do you want to push yourself to new limits? Do you want to actually reach your full potential? Do you want to fight No Holds Barred? Do you want to learn self defense? It doesn't matter.

We will help you reach your goal.

We often hear about students who are only interested in getting into shape being forced or pressured to compete. That will never happen at Ivey League Mixed Martial Arts.

Whatever your personal goals are, our instructors will bend over backwards to help you accomplish them.

Does Our System Work?

Many of the people who come to Ivey League come here for self defense. So it makes sense to ask "does the system of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu you teach work in a real life fight?" To that we answer yes, a definite yes!

You may be surprised to know that most fights are decided on the ground. What that means is that an attacker may strike his or her victim, but ultimately will damage or control the victim on the ground. Being able to defend yourself or, even better, disable an attacker on the ground is a skill that may save your life one day. You don't have to take our word for it though, just ask the many law enforcement agents he has taught to improve their on the job skills. He has worked with many law enforcement divisions including:

  • DC Police
  • Park police
  • NYPD
  • New Jersey State Police
  • Ann Arundel Police
  • Philadelphia Police

These groups listed above don't use Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for sport, but rather for real life situations that could mean life or death. Hopefully you will never have to use these skills in defense, but you can be confident knowing that you have the same skills as these professionals. Danny is a big believer in BJJ for self defense based on personal experience and is passionate about helping others learn to defend themselves in any situation.
